As I search Youtube wondering if I’ll find my favourite song, by Miss Louise Bennett-Coverley, I think to myself, I shall definitely grow my children to be cultured. What will culture be in the future? I don’t know but only time will tell.
Miss Lou was a great poet, she was famous for her use of Patois in her poetry, and for being one of the first persons to capture Jamaica, the real Jamaican-ness into the written and performing arts. She died when I was about 11 years old, and in those days what she did was known as folklore, but what I see is simply poetry.
Take a listen to one of my favourite songs by her, “Long Time Gal”
Happy Birthday Miss Lou (September 7, 1919 – July 26, 2006)
