Hey guys, summer is coming to a close, so let’s make the best of it. The events are still up and running, here is a short list of things happening this week. Comment below if you’re interested in checking out one of these events!
I woke with a groan, knowing damn well we should have went to bed long before 12am but I wanted to be the first to wish Autumne a happy birthday. I also knew my best friend very well and hit snooze, there was no way she’d be getting up just yet. I hit stop on the alarm this time, grateful for the 10 more minutes. The house spun with the two of us fighting for the shower, getting ready, listening out for the kettle, and checking the time. We had to be at the makeup artist’s place by 6am.
We got there on time by the what must have been magic, or I guess the thief of a taxi driver that over charged us. We hopped out the taxi and began to call the MUA. None of us had credit, and with amazing luck the light drizzle got heavier. I called her on Whatsapp twice and it rang without an answer. As I was about to try again, the gates to the apartment opened and we rushed in.Team member number one of three greeted us, and an hour long wait ensued because of the tardy client before us. When the rest of the team arrived, they got to work promptly and moved in sync with ease. Completing both our faces, leaving two giddy girls, snapping a lot of selfies. Finally feeling the buzz of anticipation about jumping in the Carnival Road March for the first time. Continue reading “On The Road”
I’m taking a break from posting new music just for this week, because it is carnival week. Regularly it would have been the usual but seeing as I took it upon myself to jump in the Carnival Road March for the first time…Yes, in costume, feathers, makeup and all, I’m sharing a Soca song today. This was a hard pick because I like a lot of the 2017 Soca songs, take a listen to “Know The Face” by Marvay.
I appreciated that long holiday weekend but it flew by really quickly. Every week there’s something new, this week is ‘Carnival Week’ I.E. the week before the carnival road march; so there are a lot of fetes going on. Take a look at my list of events for this week 🙂 Continue reading “Upcoming Events!”
A lot of persons wait patiently for this week in April, this week has Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and is followed by Easter Sunday & Monday. So for those who work a 9-5 like myself, we count days on the calendar to public holidays, and they are Good Friday and Easter Monday. In Jamaica we’re nearing the end of Carnival/Bacchanal Season, so there are a lot of fetes going on, but there are also some fun family activities as this time has public holidays; here is a list of events for Easter Weekend.
Today is Ash Wednesday, which has a lot of significance for different persons; as for myself, I am grateful for the public holiday. Yesterday was Carnival Tuesday in Trinidad, and as such today signifies the end of their carnival season, and the beginning of our own, here in Jamaica. We celebrate carnival here, because it’s fun. The origin is that, a group of persons went Trinidad and Tobago and experienced their carnival season and fell in love with the festivities, so they brought it back home. Our carnival season does not fall in line with the true religious reasoning, and begins on Ash Wednesday. This was the decided date so as to not be in competition with Trinidad.
I’m a lover of music, so I’m glad we were introduced to Calypso and Soca. The riddim calls for a response from the body, it’s quite enthralling. In preparing for Bacchanal in Jamaica, I found this groovy soca song, today I’m sharing with you “Calypso” by GBM Nutron. I have had it on repeat from last weekend, the instrumental in this song has me hooked, I urge you to listen keenly, maybe you will be able to list all the instruments that created this beautiful melody.
In came the New Year, in the blink of an eye or the pop of a bottle, 2016 was gone. Cheers to life, we had airily planned out 2017, this year would be one of adventures and new experiences. A big one being Jamaica’s Carnival Road March. As a novice, I stalked as many social media pages as I deemed necessary to get the inside Intel on Carnival know-how. I linked the two people I knew wouldn’t laugh me to scorn, and learnt some key tips and tricks. Now came January, and it was band/costume launch galore, for the first time, Jamaica was having four different Carnivals or as a Trinidadian would put it, four different Bands. For many years one Band had control of our Carnival, Bacchanal Jamaica, where that band had different costume sections which marched on di road. For Jamaica’s 2017 Carnival the different bands are Bacchanal Jamaica, Xodus Carnival, Xaymaca International, and Jamaica Carnival.
I didn’t register ’til near the deadline for my band, January 31st, because I was spending an extravagant amount of money, I decided to wait until all the bands had their costume launches, then I would make my final decision. During the tedious wait I emailed a bunch of makeup artists, and found out their prices, as well as searched for boots online. Bacchanal Jamaica had their costume launch on January 7th with a wait till January 12th for the official website to be ready. Xodus Carnival had their launch on December 14th followed by the costumes and prices up on Instagram from January 11th but their website launched on January 12th. Xaymaca International had their costume launch on January 21st and their website was up by the 23rd. Jamaica Carnival had their costume launch on January 27th. Today I’m sharing a Soca song, I can’t say I have a favourite Soca artiste but I listened to the 2017 Soca Starter Mix by DJ Private Ryan, and this song stood out to me. This year I’ve taken it upon myself to jump in Jamaica’s Road March for the first time, and I feel like taking you on the journey with me, so please enjoy my favourite Soca song at the moment 🙂 Here is Lip Service by Machel Montano.
It’s January and that means Jamaica’s Carnival season is right around the corner, so this is the time to listen out for the new Soca songs on the streets. Our Carnival season is March-April, so I have a couple months to get abreast.
Christmas holiday has officially began for some (like me 😀 ) while others are still confined by ongoing exams. I actually quite enjoy this season, the food, the good vibes and cheerfulness, the family time, but I love going out with my friends as well. Take a look at a couple events happening this week.
